Together with Rich Hammersmith [Of Grave Concern, LLC] and a number of other local veteran organizations, the Marine Corps League’s Howlin Mad Detachment is taking up an effort to restore numerous veteran's grave markers in the area.

A large number of grave markers for veterans of the Civil War on up to Vietnam have become, in Marine Corps jargon, unserviceable. Some of the oldest of grave markers have sunk several inches, and in some cases, a foot or more into the earth. Besides sunken stones, some headstones are broken and many are impregnated with mold and mildew.

Rich Hammersmith, owner and founder of a business titled, “Of Grave Concern,” has offered his services to restore these grave markers to a condition that they have not seen in decades or more, in some cases over a century. Mr. Hammersmith has proposed this restoration project and is willing to provide his services in restoration at a significant discount for veteran's grave markers. The standard restoration for a veteran's marker will be $40.00 per gravestone. Restoration generally involves raising the sunken marker, cleaning and sealing the stone, and pouring a new concrete footing, below the original base when possible.
